Sweet Lavender

When it comes to elegant and classic-themed weddings, lavender can easily be incorporated into your wedding day’s vision. The most common meaning of the Lavender flower is love and devotion — two words that are at the heart of every wedding. Why not use Lavender sachets as wedding favors or lavender itself can be used as a bridal bouquet.

One of my favorite west coast wedding photographers, Elizabeth Messina, carried a beautiful bouquet of lavender adorned with vintage velvet ribbon on her special day.

When most people hear the word “lavender”, they immediately conjure up visions of fields in Provence, France or Surrey, England. Well, hold onto your hats. Lavender farms are popping up here in the United States. This wonderful and multi-faceted herb isn’t grown only in England and France any longer. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that there was a lavender farm practically in my own backyard. In the town of East Marion, on the north fork of Long Island in New York, there’s a 17 acre lavender farm called, “Lavender By the Bay“.

Owners Serge and Susan Rozenbaum started growing lavender in their yard for their visitors and houseguests. When they had too much lavender left over, they left bundles on the side of the road in front of their home. When folks started leaving money in a tin can, voila, the idea for starting a lavender farm of their very own was born.

The farm is open 7 days a week 9:00a.m. – 5:00p.m. from May through September, (they close the fields at 4:30 p.m.). The Farm is open Friday – Sunday 9:00a.m. – 5:00p.m. during the months of October & November. It’s a labor of love for this husband and wife team.

Rebecca and Gary Rosenberg, owners of Sonoma Lavender, a lavender farm in Santa Rosa, California share a similar passion for lavender with their east coast counterparts. This west coast team wrote a book entitled,”Lavender Fields of America” featuring lavender farms across the U.S. from New York to California, Texas, Oregon and even Hawaii. Enjoy your favorite beverage as you curl up with this beautiful coffee table book. It’s sure to inspire you and definitely brighten your day.
